How it works

JK GridWatch shows where the power is out across Jammu & Kashmir, right now. It works like an outage tracker for websites, but for electricity: people in an area report a cut, and when enough of them do, the area turns red on the map.

When an area turns red

Areas covered

Every city, town, village and mohalla in the 20 districts of the J&K UT that appears in OpenStreetMap or GeoNames, over 14,000 places. If yours is missing, add it here.

Grid stations, lines and feeders

Power reaches your home in steps: a JKPTCL grid station steps it down to 33 kV, a 33 kV line carries it to a receiving station, an 11 kV feeder takes it to your transformer. Nobody publishes this map, so we built it from the shutdown orders JPDCL and KPDCL issue. Each order names a line and the areas it feeds. Every station and line page links to the orders it came from.

When two or more areas on one line report a cut together, the line is marked as likely down. When two or more lines from one station are down, the station is. Planned shutdowns from the orders are shown so you can tell scheduled work from a fault. Station positions come from OpenStreetMap where it has them.

Most 11 kV feeders are still missing. If you know yours (it is often printed on the electricity bill), add it from your area's page.

We do not ask for your name or number. To stop spam we keep a one-way hash of your IP address and a random browser id, never the raw values. Your GPS location, if you use "Use my location", is only used to find the nearest area and is not stored.
